VA Pension is an income-based program for low income veterans. These veterans must be permanently and totally disabled (or age 65). The disability must be non-service connected.

Veterans may be eligible to receive tax-free monthly benefits. This eligibility is not effected by when or where they served. Those included are veterans who have:

• disabilities
• medical conditions
• injuries incurred or aggravated during active military service

The Veterans Health Administration is America’s largest integrated health care system. They provide care at 1,245 health care facilities. This includes 170 medical centers and 1,065 outpatient care sites. These outpatient care sites are of varying complexity (VHA outpatient clinics). They serve 9 million enrolled veterans each year.

• help paying tuition
• finding the right school or training program
• career counseling

Memorial Benefits

Find out in advance if a veteran or family member is eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery. Do this by filling out and submitting the pre-need burial eligibility application. 

Pre-need eligibility may be unknown when the veteran, his/her spouse or dependent dies. This is called the time of need and family members should:

• locate the veteran’s DD 214 or other discharge papers (if readily available)
• go to schedule a burial to begin the process 

Arrangements can then be made directly with:

• a funeral home
• the National Cemetery Scheduling Office
• a VA national cemetery

Bereavement Counseling

VA vet centers provide counseling. This counseling is for the relatives of service members who die on active duty. These relatives include spouses, children, parents and siblings. The nearest vet center is in Charlotte, NC. Call 202-273-9116 or email vet.center@va.gov.
