Laura Blackwell Lindsey and Larry Pittman were officially sworn in as Cabarrus County Commissioners on Monday. They join Chris Measmer, Lynn Shue and Kenny Wortman on the five-person board.

In an organizational meeting held prior to the first Work Session of the new board, commissioners elected Measmer as chair. Lindsey was elected as vice-chairman.

Judges Nathaniel Knust and William Hamby Jr. officiated the swearing-in ceremony, which was held in the rotunda of the Government Center in downtown Concord.

Commissioner Lindsey has been a Cabarrus County resident for 22 years. She has been married to Kyle Lindsey for two-and-a-half years and has two sons, Brody and Ryder Blackwell, and a daughter, Aida Lindsey.

Lindsey has worked at Atrium Health for 14 years and served on the Cabarrus County Board of Education since 2018.

“This has been quite a journey,” Lindsey told the large crowd at the ceremony. “Tonight is about you all and the hard work that you put in to making this change in Cabarrus County. I want you all to remember that God puts us on missions sometimes, and we don’t know why. But someone told me something this weekend that really stuck with me—God doesn’t choose the equipped, he equips the chosen.

“I’m truly grateful for this opportunity and I look forward to serving the taxpayers.”

Commissioner Pittman, a North Carolina native, was born in Kinston and raised in New Bern. He attended Mount Olive Junior College (Associate of Science), Atlantic Christian College (Bachelor of Arts in English) and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity). He has been married to wife Tammy for over 48 years. They raised a daughter and two sons, one now deceased. The couple has seven grandchildren.

Pittman is a retired Presbyterian minister. He pastored six churches and served as company chaplain at Snyder Packaging in Concord for over fourteen years. He currently serves as a supply preacher at Center Grove Church in Midland.

Pittman served in the NC House of Representatives from 2011 through December 2022.

“I never thought I’d be standing here doing this tonight and I’m amazed at the support that I’ve had,” Pittman said at the event. “I appreciate everybody that’s been supporting me, some since I was in the State House in Raleigh and now this. I am for the people. My campaign slogan since 2012 has been ‘because the people matter.’ I am very strongly convinced that if we abuse power, we abuse the people. I appreciate your support and I need your prayers. I can’t do this on my own. My wife, Tammy, and my son, Samuel, who are up here with me, are a lot of support. But I need the Lord.”
