“Goodness gracious, look at all these people!” Active Living and Parks Director Londa Strong proclaimed as she looked out over the sea of more than 300 gathered in front of her.

Some arrived early and many stayed late, but all came for one purpose: to experience the new Cabarrus County Library and Active Living Center at Afton Ridge—the first County facility in the area.

Cabarrus County commissioners, management and representatives from the Library System and Active Living and Parks Department hosted the grand opening of the 40,000-square-foot facility, which features space for fitness activities like dance classes, yoga, tai chi and games, along with convenient access to a wide variety of reading materials, private study rooms and more.

The space reinforces the notion that education, recreation and community engagement are essential for a thriving community.

Cabarrus Library System Director Melanie Holles listed the library amenities. “We have over 55,000 new items on the shelves, 17 staff members, a large programming room, study spaces, quiet reading areas, internet computers, printing and free Wi-Fi. We hope this becomes an important space for the community.”

Holles also emphasized an opportunity for community involvement. “The library—and I know the Active Living Center as well—is a place where you can give back to the community. We always welcome volunteers and are looking for people to join our Friends Board.”

The energy was high as attendees counted down to the ribbon cutting before getting their first look at the facility. Once inside, visitors explored every corner, imagining how they would use the amenities. Children gathered around tables, playing computer games. Teens browsed the well-stocked bookshelves. Adults took turns on the vast array of fitness machines. Groups marveled at the outdoor space, which features bocce and shuffleboard.

Board of Commissioners Chair Chris Measmer summed up the facility best.

“This center is more than just a space,” he said. “It’s a place where access, fun and learning go hand in hand. There’s truly something for everyone.”

The County collaborated with Silling Architects, HBM Architect Interior Design, Childress Klein and Shelco on the project.

Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
