Tim Furr tapped to fill Cabarrus Commissioner seat

Following his resignation from the Cabarrus County School Board on Monday night, Tim Furr has been named to fill the open seat on the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners.
Furr was named to the seat vacated by Barbara Strang, who had to resign her board position due to a conflict with her new job as a magistrate in Mecklenburg County. Furr was selected by Cabarrus County Clerk of Court Bill Baggs after the remaining commissioners didn’t reach a consensus on a replacement.
Furr will be sworn in at the Cabarrus County Government Center on Thursday (July 20) at 1 p.m.
Furr served three terms over a nearly 10-year period on the Cabarrus County School Board. His vacated seat will be up for election in November 2024.
“It was the right time,” he said Tuesday. “The school board was in a good place, and it felt like a good time to make a break.”
Furr said he has contemplated running for county commissioner in the past.
“I’ve been a part of the Cabarrus community my whole life,” Furr said. “I’m approachable. I’m fair and I listen to people. I treat everyone the same.”
Asked how his role might differ in his new seat, Furr said the basic teamwork element is the same. “It’s a larger scope, but you still have to work together.”
A lifelong Cabarrus resident, Furr owns several businesses. He has extensive experience with local sports organizations, including serving as a football coach at Central Cabarrus High School.
He and his wife live in Mt. Pleasant and have three children and four grandchildren.
