Cabarrus program collects $12.7 million in child support
Cabarrus County has 23 caseworkers dedicated to its Child Support Services team, a division of the County's Human Services Department. Between July 2020 and June 2021, the team managed more than 5,100 cases and collected $12.7 million in back child support payments on behalf of Cabarrus County children. Each case is complex and comes with a number of challenges along the way.
August is Child Support Awareness Month. This year, we spoke with Child Support Manager Susan Dillon about the work of her team and the impact they make in Cabarrus. Here's what she had to say.

What is the biggest misconception people have about your program?
The biggest misconception people have about our program is that we can assist with custody. Our office only deals with matters relating to child support.
Describe a typical day in Child Support Services.
There are no typical days in Child Support--we expect the unexpected! We work with other states and countries to locate and enforce child support orders when one party resides outside of NC. We also establish paternity and obtain orders in cases where there is both a legal and biological father. I think for me, it’s also very challenging when we cannot locate a non-custodial parent. We want to be able to enforce orders but we exhaust all resources and are still unable to find the person.
Why do you work in child support?
Working in child support is important to me because I believe children who do not receive adequate financial and emotional support from both parents may experience greater difficulty in becoming healthy, happy and productive citizens.
When should a parent call for assistance?
North Carolina Child Support Services are available to parents and/or nonparent caretakers of minor children. Services provided by North Carolina Child Support Services include location, the establishment of paternity, establishment or modifying of child support orders, enforcement of child support orders, collection and processing of child support ordered payments.
