Apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit

Due to an overwhelming number of our citizens wishing to obtain a NC Concealed Handgun Permit at this time, our appointments are booking up fast. Please be aware our appointments are booked out months in advance.

Looking to apply for a concealed handgun permit? Read the information below and follow the steps to apply. If your permit has expired, you will have to apply for a new permit.

For a Change of Address, you must have a valid Cabarrus County Concealed Carry Permit. If your permit is from another county, you must contact that county's Sheriff's Office that issued the permit first. 

Requirements for New Applicants

In order to qualify, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be a citizen or a naturalized citizen
  • Resident Aliens: Must bring a resident alien card, social security card and a NC driver’s license or NC ID card
  • Be twenty-one (21) years of age
  • Have attained at least one month's residency (30 days) in Cabarrus County
  • Not suffer from any mental or physical infirmity which would prevent safe handgun handling and operation
  • Successfully complete a firearms training and safety course that has been designed by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards Commission (See NCDOJ website for approved instructors in North Carolina)
  • At the time of appointment, please provide a valid NCID or Driver's License provided by the State of North Carolina  

Requirements for Law Enforcement or Other Type of Employee

If you are a current Law Enforcement Officer or employed by local, State or company police in North Carolina (N.C.G.S § 14-415.12(A)), you must bring the following items with you in order to exempt you from taking the NC Firearms Safety Training Course:

Law Enforcement Officer:

  1. Firearms Exemption Form
  2. Current employee identification
  3. North Carolina issued identification

NC Private Protection Services:

  1. North Carolina issued identification
  2. Firearms registration permit issued by the board
  3. Employee identification
  4. Completed Exemption From Firearms Course form

Retired Law Enforcement Officers

If you're applying within two (2) years of retirement, in accordance with NCGS 14-415.19(a1), the Retired Law Enforcement Officer applying for the first time must also submit:

  1. A copy of the officer's letter of retirement from either the North Carolina Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System or the North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System and;
  2. Written documentation from the head of the agency where the person was previously employed indicating that the person was neither involuntarily terminated nor under administrative or criminal investigation within six months of retirement.

Fees

  • New Concealed Handgun Permit: $90.00 ($10.00 fingerprinting fee included)
  • Renewal Concealed Handgun Permit: $75.00
  • Duplicate Concealed Weapon Permit: $15.00

There is also a $4.00 convenience fee for applying and paying for your permit online. The convenience fee is not collected by the Sheriff and is paid to the company that provides this online payment system. You will not be charged if you apply in person.

Step 3.Gather Your Materials

Prior to using this system, make sure you have the following information available:

  • NC Driver's license / NC ID number
  • NC Firearms Training Certificate Number (located at the bottom right corner of the certificate) - not required for Renewals

For renewal applications, you will be asked to enter in your permit number and date of expiration.

Step 4.Submit Your Application

Once you have your materials gathered and have read through the requirements and fees, visit our online portal to apply.

Step 5.Background Check

A criminal background check is performed on each applicant before granting the permit. The processing of the concealed handgun permit takes much longer than the handgun purchase permit. The Sheriff has forty-five (45) days from the time all application materials, to include receipt of the mental health records, are received to either issue or deny a permit.

Step 6.Receive your Permit

Once your background check has been completed and you are approved, you will receive your permit within 10 business days via mail.
