Conservation Contests

Annual SWCD Contests

On behalf of the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the Cabarrus Soil and Water Conservation District hosts annual contests that encourage students to research a conservation theme and format what they learn into a poster, slide show, essay or speech. Entries are judged on the strength of their conservation message and the effectiveness of their message.

Participating schools may submit school winners to the district contest. First place winners in each grade advance to the area contest in March. First-place winners can participate in the state contest in May. More information on contest rules can be found at our CSWCD Contests Handbook Update.

Envirothon is the largest high school environmental science contest in North America. It culminates in three area, state and North American competitions, providing the opportunity for students to earn thousands of dollars in scholarship money.

Five-member teams, sponsored by the local Soil and Water Conservation District, work together to compete at middle (Grades 5-8) and high (Grades 9-12) school levels. These teams train in the areas of soils, aquatics, wildlife, forestry and current environmental issues. Qualifying teams at area levels participate in the state competition. The winning high school team represents the state at the North American Envirothon each summer.

Visit NC Envirothon to access study materials, and to get information on registration and volunteering for the NC Envirothon competition.
